How Do You Keep Finger-Drumming Double Strokes Even? A Same-Voice RRLL Interval Drill
When RRLL sounds like “strong–weak, gap, strong–weak,” repeating the whole roll does not show whether the first repeatable interval error remains associated with a transition class or a grid phase. Record four manual, same-voice takes instead: alternating singles A0; right-led doubles D-R; left-led doubles D-L; and a fresh alternating return A1. D-R and D-L place the same four transitions—R→R, R→L, L→L, and L→R—on different grid positions. That mirror tests the association; it does not identify which contact caused the error.
Scope: this guide tests deliberate manual taps on one pad or one repeated drum voice, using straight sixteenth notes in 4/4 for the complete scored arc. R and L identify hands, not a required individual finger; choose and record one finger assignment for the full four-take arc. The PAS and drum-set sources below concern percussion sticking and, in places, drumsticks. We transfer only the musical pattern, equal-subdivision target, balanced-level target, and slow-to-fast-to-slow practice direction—not stick grip, rebound, height, or bounce mechanics. Optional MIDI inspection requires a device and recorder that expose recorder-parsed onset events; it is not presented as a FingerDrum feature. This guide prescribes no universal BPM, timing tolerance, velocity number, pad response setting, or fingering. A0/D-R/D-L/A1, the four-transition card, mirror test, diagnosis order, repair cells, and stopping rule are FingerDrum’s original editorial synthesis.
Play one bar each of RLRL, RRLL, LLRR, and RLRL again; record them and mark the first repeatable long–short gap or same-hand second-hit level drop. First require 16 captured onset events—or, without MIDI, 16 discernible audio attacks—matching the 16 intended contacts in both A0 and A1. Then compare D-R with D-L. If the same short or long gap remains associated with R→R after that transition moves from 1→e to &→a, record a transition-class association under this setup. If the mismatch stays on the same sixteenth-note position after the hand labels move, investigate pulse or an unintended positional accent. Neither result identifies which contact caused the error. If A0 and A1 disagree, stop: the baseline did not repeat, so the doubles cannot yet be isolated.
A manual double stroke is an equal-grid pair, not every kind of “double”
The Percussive Arts Society lists the Double Stroke Open Roll in its International Drum Rudiments and writes the sticking as alternating two-stroke hand groups. In this pad adaptation, RRLL means two intended contacts by the right hand followed by two intended contacts by the left hand. For the scored arc below, every onset occupies one straight-sixteenth position in 4/4. One hand may use the same finger twice or two named fingers; that is a fingering condition to hold constant, not part of the definition.
PAS recommends practicing rudiments open (slow) to close (fast) to open, or at an even moderate tempo. Yamaha’s beginner double-stroke exercise asks the player to listen for the second stroke of each hand at the same volume as the first. Those are useful musical targets, but the cited lesson uses drumsticks. Its stick-rebound instructions do not establish equivalent mechanics on your touchscreen or pad, so copy neither the motion nor a promised speed outcome. Choose a BPM at which you can produce four deliberate sixteenth-note contacts per beat.

The PAS paradiddle article explicitly separates the single and double components of RLRR LRLL. That makes paradiddles a useful later application, not a substitute baseline. Here the double itself is the subject: one voice, no planned accents, no pad-to-pad melody, and no automatic repeat.
Record A0 → D-R → D-L → A1 without changing the setup
Yamaha’s FGDP lessons cover finger-drumming fundamentals through eighth and sixteenth notes. Roland separately catalogs a V-Drums double-stroke-fill lesson and HandSonic finger-exercise lessons. These examples establish that subdivisions, hand patterns, and electronic percussion can be taught together; they do not define this four-take method, teach finger-played double strokes, or make one layout universal.
- Freeze one voice and surface: use one physical or virtual pad with a short, clearly articulated sound. Keep the sound, pad, listening level, response settings, and routing unchanged. Turn off Note Repeat, arpeggiation, echo, and any other process that automatically adds onsets you did not manually play.
- Declare the physical intent: write the exact finger assignment for R and L. If a hand uses one finger twice, record that. If it uses two fingers, record their order. Do not switch strategies inside the arc.
- Choose an operable tempo: keep the scored grid fixed at straight sixteenth notes in 4/4, then choose a BPM you can count and tap without strain. Keep the same metronome and tempo for all four takes. That BPM is a session condition, not a universal recommendation.
- Preserve raw evidence: record audio and, when your setup exposes it, unquantized MIDI. Do not normalize, quantize, nudge, delete, or replace events before the comparison. A corrected musical copy can be made later.
- Use a middle-bar window: play at least three continuous bars per take. Treat the first as entry, score the middle bar’s 16 intended onsets, and keep playing into the next bar so the final hand-off is not judged at a cropped edge.

If either alternating control contains an extra or missing event, an unstable bar, or a different response state, label the arc unresolved. Do not average A0 and A1 into a clean baseline or blame the doubles for a condition the controls cannot repeat.
Four adjacent transition classes reveal more than one average timing score
A roll-wide average can hide a repeating long–short cycle. Instead, assign every adjacent gap in D-R and D-L to the movement that begins and ends it. Continue into the next bar so the gap from beat 4’s a to the following beat 1 remains observable. The following beat-1 onset is capture margin; it is not a seventeenth scored onset in the middle bar.

The MIDI Association documents that a Note On carries a note number and velocity; your recorder supplies the musical position or timestamp used here. Count only recorder-parsed onset events for the chosen voice, then keep timing and dynamics as separate columns. If you inspect raw MIDI 1.0 messages instead, do not count a velocity-zero Note On used as Note Off as a new onset. A velocity value can help describe an input difference, but it does not prove final perceived loudness after sample selection, envelopes, or effects.
- Gate event identity first: require one onset for each of the 16 intended hand labels. An extra or missing event outranks any spacing judgment. When MIDI is unavailable, label this an audio count rather than a verified MIDI event count.
- Keep the recorder’s own units: for each adjacent onset, write
observed gap − target sixteenth-note gapin ticks, samples, milliseconds, or the ruler unit already displayed. Do not convert units merely to borrow somebody else’s tolerance. - Group, do not smooth: place the signed result under
R→R,R→L,L→L, orL→R. Preserve all observations; one global average can cancel a short gap against a long one. - Compare the mirror: ask whether the direction of the mismatch follows the same transition class in D-R and D-L. If it stays on the same beat phase while the hand labels change, record a position-associated result instead.
- Inspect velocity, then audio: only after count and spacing, compare the first and second hits of each pair. Finally note timbre, tails, or apparent loudness in the audio without rewriting the event verdict.

No universal offset makes a double “good.” The useful evidence is categorical and repeatable: the controls agree, the intended events exist, and the same transition class shows the same direction after mirroring. If the result changes with every take, preserve the disagreement instead of selecting the neatest capture.
The first repeatable mismatch chooses the next controlled test
Read the table from top to bottom and stop at the first matching row. This order prevents a quiet sample or a late-sounding tail from being used as proof of a missing manual contact.

A mirror comparison supports an association, not a medical or biomechanical diagnosis. It cannot prove why a finger moves as it does, and it should not be used to work through pain. Stop the session if the gesture is uncomfortable; this article does not provide injury treatment.
Repair one failed transition with a four-slot cell
Keep the original sound, pad, finger assignment, tempo, and straight-sixteenth grid. Replace only the surrounding hand order so the failed interval becomes easy to locate. Each dot below is a silent grid slot, not permission to shorten the bar.

- Choose the row from the evidence card: do not practice every row as a generic warm-up. If event registration failed, solve that layer before a timing cell.
- Keep a complete bar: count all 16 slots and capture one unbroken bar after an entry bar. A rest must stay a rest; an extra tap is new evidence.
- Return immediately to the full mirror pair: after the isolated cell is repeatable, capture D-R and D-L again at the original setting. Passing the cell is not yet a full-roll pass.
- Close with both controls: make a fresh A0/D-R/D-L/A1 arc. Keep the change only if the controls still agree and the original transition mismatch no longer repeats.
Do not increase tempo while changing the finger assignment, response curve, sound, and sticking. If you want to compare one-finger-per-hand against two-fingers-per-hand, save each as a separately named arc with every other condition fixed. A faster result achieved by changing three variables cannot tell you which change mattered.
Retest the full arc before moving pairs around a fill
Run one untouched confirmation arc after the intervention. If the result differs from the first retest, report both and stay at the last repeatable condition. If A0/A1 pass and D-R/D-L no longer show a repeatable transition mismatch or level collapse, move one new dimension: duration, tempo, fingering, or orchestration. PAS’s slow-to-fast-to-slow direction makes a return take essential; the faster version does not replace control at the original tempo.
A simple two-beat transfer is to move each same-hand pair to one short drum voice. This adds pad travel, so it belongs after the same-voice test, not inside it.

The destinations are an example, not a required FingerDrum layout. Keep the eight equal subdivisions and land the next downbeat without inserting a ninth fill onset.
If the transfer fails while the same-voice arc passes, the new evidence concerns reach, mapping, or voice changes—not relearning RRLL. Shorten the movement or return to two voices while keeping the hand row. If your setup supports mapping the same sound to another pad, alternating between those pads can be a valid production or performance choice, but it is a different task from proving two deliberate same-hand contacts on one pad.
Must R or L use one finger twice?
No. R and L name hands. One hand may repeat one finger or use two named fingers, depending on the surface and goal. Declare the order, keep it fixed for the complete arc, and treat another fingering as a new comparison.
Do I need MIDI recording?
No. Audio can reveal an audible long–short cycle, and video can record visible contacts. Neither proves the raw MIDI event count. Without raw MIDI, do not claim that a missing sound proves a missing Note On or that two sounds prove two captured onset events; label the evidence audio/video-only.
Should the second hit be accented?
Not in this diagnostic target. The two hits have equal rhythmic roles, and Yamaha’s cited double-stroke exercise asks for the second stroke at the same volume as the first. A musical accent is valid later, but it is a new dynamics condition.
What tempo should I reach?
There is no universal target. Begin where every intended contact can register and every transition can be observed. Change tempo only after the complete A0/D-R/D-L/A1 arc repeats, then return to the original setting and confirm it again.
Is a double stroke the same as a double trigger?
No. A double stroke declares two physical contacts and expects two onsets. A double trigger is an unwanted extra event from one intended contact. Event count comes before timing diagnosis so those cases are not confused.
Stop when you can name the last repeatable control and the first repeatable transition mismatch—or when the full arc passes twice without editing. Do not add speed or orchestration to an unresolved arc. A documented L→R hand-off gap with passing A0/A1 is more useful than a faster roll whose first failure cannot be located.
