How Do You Play a Clean Flam on Drum Pads? A Three-Window Drill

A flam contains a grace note followed by a main note, but it should not behave like two equally weighted rhythmic events. Close the spacing too far and a pad may collapse the pair into a flat attack; leave it too open and you hear “tap—hit” as two notes. First check that both strikes can be heard; if a MIDI or trigger-event log is available, use it to confirm the registered count and order. Then lock the main note to the click and move only the grace note, narrowing a deliberately open pair until it sounds like one widened attack. The process gives you an observable order and a rollback point instead of a guessed “correct” number of milliseconds.

Scope: this guide covers a basic flam with one grace note and one main note. It does not prescribe a universal millisecond gap or claim that every touchscreen, drum pad, sound, or trigger setting can register the same close pair. Some PAS and Yamaha sources concern sticks; this guide transfers their musical aims—grace before main, one widened attack, hand isolation, and gradual tempo work—not stick-height measurements. Pin the main note to the click; move only the grace note

Use one short snare or tom sound with a clear attack, choosing one fixed finger per hand. Confirm stable singles on both sides, then play a deliberately open g → M pair: lowercase g is the grace note and uppercase M the main note. Keep M on the click while moving g closer over successive takes. When the pair collapses, return to the last wider version. Normal-speed audio judges F, W, or C only; if the device separately provides a MIDI or trigger-event log, use that log to confirm g before M.

A flam uses two strikes to shape one ornamented event

The Percussive Arts Society (PAS) lists the flam family among its 40 International Drum Rudiments. In PAS’s An Analytical Approach to Rudiments, Karlyn R. Viña describes a flam as a note with one grace note: the grace arrives first and the main note follows, widening the attack. Her listening target is one “flam,” not a separated “fa—lam.” Yamaha’s flam warm-up similarly describes a stroke preceded by a grace note. The main note therefore retains the written rhythmic position, and the grace enters before it.

A right or left flam is named for the hand playing the main note, not the earlier hand. This guide keeps that role logic and fixes one finger per hand: a right flam is gL → MR, with the left hand playing grace before the right-hand main; a left flam is gR → ML. Repeated rights and repeated lefts before alternation expose a hand that can perform only the main-note or grace-note role.

Do not begin with “How many milliseconds?”

PAS’s The Flam Build explains that space must remain between grace and main—otherwise the result is a simultaneous flat flam—while the amount of space changes with style and interpretation. The cited teaching sources therefore do not define one millisecond value for every instrument, tempo, and musical setting. PAS recommends slow-to-fast-to-slow practice, while Yamaha recommends beginning slowly and tracking progress. On a finger pad, trigger behavior, sample attack, monitoring, and tempo further change the usable boundary. The drill below creates three repeatable listening windows and a rollback rule instead of disguising one number as a universal answer.

Before narrowing, prove that the pad can register the pair

Yamaha’s FGDP-30 product page explicitly lists flams among the details its finger-drum pads are designed to capture. That establishes flams as a legitimate digital-pad performance task, but it does not establish an identical minimum interval across all hardware. Melodics advises finger drummers to bounce away from pads rather than press them like buttons, keeping the fingers naturally curved and relaxed. Those basics are useful for creating a repeatable single-hit baseline before diagnosing the pair.

  1. Freeze the sound: choose a short, dry sound whose tail does not mask the next onset. Do not change the sound, effects, master level, or monitoring path during one comparison.
  2. Play four singles per side: fix one finger on each hand and verify that each produces four singles without a missed, held, or accidental extra trigger.
  3. Play eight obviously open pairs: keep g → M and leave enough space to hear two distinct onsets. If a MIDI or trigger-event log exists, verify two ordered events per pair. Without such a log, audio can confirm two discernible onsets with no third onset at this wide spacing; it cannot prove the device’s internal event count.
  4. Classify registration first: if an obviously open pair still loses its second hit or creates a third, stop narrowing. If your tool permits it, test two adjacent pads assigned the same sound; otherwise use a pad or wider spacing that can register reliably. Do not simultaneously change threshold, velocity curve, and sound while practicing.

Both sides produce stable singles. With an event log, every open pair contains exactly two ordered events; without one, all eight open pairs contain two discernible ordered onsets and no third onset. Write down the grace and main hands before narrowing. If the singles themselves are unreliable, return to the drum-pad velocity and trigger calibration guide instead of learning a compensating motion.

These are not three fixed time ranges. They are A/B/C references for the same pad, sound, tempo, and monitoring path. Record one intentionally flat example and one intentionally wide example before searching for C. “Too close” and “too open” then have evidence you can replay today, not just a vague memory of the previous attempt.

PAS recommends practicing rudiments open–close–open (slow–fast–slow), and Yamaha likewise recommends starting slowly. This drill treats repetition rate and internal flam spacing as separate variables: in one pass, either shorten g → M or raise the click. Do not change both, and do not compress the two strikes into simultaneity.

Without an event log, leave the “event count” field blank: W audio can establish two discernible onsets, while C audio establishes one widened attack only. Do not infer the device’s internal trigger count from ordinary audio.

Record three takes and act on the first failed layer

Keep the raw F, W, and C recordings. Do not quantize them or add compression and reverb to “repair” the boundary. Normal-speed audio judges only whether the result is collapsed, wide, or one widened attack; a MIDI or trigger-event log directly checks event count and order. A waveform shows audible onsets, not the device’s internal event log, and a tight C take may not expose two triggers reliably in an ordinary waveform. Keep those evidence types separate.

Place the flam on one backbeat, then protect its order

  1. Use the smallest beat: kick on beats 1 and 3, short eighth-note hats, and main snare on beats 2 and 4. In the first pass, turn only beat 4 into a flam.
  2. Hear the next bar: complete four bars and land on bar 5 beat 1. If the beat-4 flam delays that landing, return to W and narrow again; do not delete the destination downbeat.
  3. Add beat 2 later: only after the beat-4 version passes twice should beat 2 receive a flam. Then swap the hand carrying the main note and verify that the sound role survives.
  4. Protect the pair during editing: preserve the raw MIDI take. The existing four-version quantization guide explains why flam order and internal spacing need protection; do not independently push grace and main toward one grid point.
Today’s complete pass gate

With one sound and tempo, singles are stable and open pairs pass the R gate appropriate to the available log; either hand can carry the main note on the click; right, left, and alternating flams all reach C; and the four-bar beat still lands on the next downbeat. When one condition fails, record the first R/A/N/X stage and rebuild there instead of using a maximum BPM to hide it.
