How Do You Play a 3:2 Polyrhythm on Drum Pads? A Six-Slot Drill
Three-against-two is not simply one hand playing “fast” while the other plays “slow,” and memorizing its four audible attacks is not the whole task. Across one shared span, one voice must place three evenly spaced hits while the other places two; both must meet again at the next cycle start. Divide that span into six equal slots: the three-hit voice lands on 1, 3, and 5, while the two-hit voice lands on 1 and 4. Isolate the lines, combine them, mute-test each one, and swap hands to find out whether you can still hear both pulses.
Scope: this drill addresses one basic 3:2 coordination cycle. It is not a speed grade, proof of a learning outcome, or a claim that a mathematical grid represents the performance language of any musical tradition. The six-slot pad grid, G3/G2/C/M ladder, mute test, symptom table, and pass gates are an original FingerDrum editorial framework based on the sources below—not a Baylor, Ableton, Berklee, Soundbrenner, or Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy protocol. Some teachers reverse the written 3:2 or 2:3 order; this article always names which voice plays three events and which plays two.
Choose two short, contrasting pad sounds. Voice A plays three events on 1 / 3 / 5; voice B plays two on 1 / 4. Both hands strike slot 1, followed by A, B, and A alone; slot 6 is silent before the next shared attack. Keep each isolated voice even for four consecutive cycles, then combine them. Raise the tempo only after the same result survives a guide-pulse dropout and a hand swap.
3:2 means two equal divisions of one span, not just two labels
In Ableton’s article, Afriqua introduces three-against-two as a three-note rhythmic sequence superimposed on a two-note sequence of the same duration. Baylor’s open textbook distinguishes unrelated simultaneous divisions from ordinary nested subdivision: eighths against sixteenths continue to align inside the beat, while a three-part division against a two-part division creates the relationship studied here.
The six slots are a shared coordinate system, not a third six-hit performance voice. Nick Rissman’s article in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy describes teaching 3:2 through six common subdivisions and then hearing those subdivisions as repeating cycles. Baylor likewise visualizes three evenly spaced attacks and two evenly spaced attacks on one six-part grid. The scaffold explains where the notes meet; your ears still need to retain both even lines.

To use a rhythm inside a style, keep listening to musicians from that tradition for its foundation, accent, timbre, timing nuance, and social interaction.

- Make a six-pulse guide: use a neutral click, a clap, or a third short sound to mark slots 1–6 evenly, with only slot 1 accented. This is temporary scaffolding, not another drum part.
- Assign fixed roles: choose two short sounds that remain distinguishable together. Write down the hand and pad for A and B; do not change fingers, effects, or sounds during one comparison.
- Work in full cycles: complete at least four cycles per take. Do not jump back to slot 1 after slot 5; pass silently through slot 6.
- Preserve the raw take: if your recorder or DAW displays separate pad notes, keep the original events. Otherwise record the audio and make versions that mute A or B during playback.
G3, G2, C, M: add only one difficulty at each stage

There is no universal beginner BPM. Choose a rate at which you can hear both voices, finish four cycles, and avoid snatching at the inner attacks. Increase the guide tempo by one small step only when C and M pass in both hand assignments. If a gate fails, return to the previous rate and stage instead of striking harder to hide uneven spacing.
Use sound to preserve roles, not just the visual grid
Give the two voices distinct, short timbres. Silently or softly vocalize A’s three equal points while playing only B; then vocalize B while playing A; finally play both. Baylor’s practice suggestions move from speaking one line and tapping the other to performing the two together. This checks whether each pulse remains available when the composite surface rhythm takes over your attention.
A mute test reveals more than staring at the combined waveform
Record at least four cycles and review three versions: A+B, A alone, and B alone. Do not quantize the evidence first. The combined take tells you whether the four surface events appeared; the isolated takes reveal whether one hand bent its spacing to accommodate the other.

The first failed stage is more useful than a maximum BPM. If changing sounds causes the failure, check whether their attacks are too similar or their tails mask one another. If only the hidden grid causes trouble, retain the audible guide while removing the visual reference; do not remove every cue at once.
Swap the hands, then place one cycle inside a simple beat
- Pass four cycles in the original assignment: it does not matter which hand owns A at first; complete G3, G2, C, and M as written.
- Reverse the rhythmic roles: the hand that played A now plays B, and vice versa. Merely swapping sound assignments while preserving the original hand pattern does not test the same thing. Restart from the isolated stages.
- Add one familiar anchor: place the verified cycle inside a beat you can already play, adding only one kick or backbeat anchor at a time. Remove that new voice immediately if either 3:2 line disappears.
- Return to musical context: the grid verifies ratio and cycle length, not style-specific accent, microtiming, sound, or interaction. Listen to complete performances and identify how a foundational part relates to the surrounding players.
Across four cycles, A must remain three equal points and B two equal points; only the cycle starts coincide; both parts must meet the returning guide after its dropout; and the relationship must be rebuildable with the hands reversed. Those checks demonstrate that you can hear, separate, and recombine the two voices.
